*****MUTANT SOUNDS: REBORN*****

*****MUTANT SOUNDS: REBORN*****

There's been such a passionate outpouring against our abandoning Mutant Sounds, so much encouragement from fans, artists and labels associated with the albums that we've shared to find some way to continue that it's driven us to devise a new way to keep Mutant alive.

While all former posts will remain as text archives only, Mutant Sounds will now carry on sharing rare, unreleased and long out of print music both new and old from many of your favorite artists here. It's just that this material will now be shared with the full authorization of each artist and, as a result, will be hosted on our personal Dropbox account.

Make sure to get the word out to your friends: Mutant has not died. It's just transformed and is now about to emerge like a butterfly from a chrysalis. Stay tuned and keep your eyes peeled for more goodies. The first fruits of this will begin appearing next week…

R.I.P. MUTANT SOUNDS

THE END OF AN ERA

So this is where I get to tell you everything you never wanted to hear me say. While it's been a fantastic ride and I hope everyone has enjoyed it, the recent news that issues pertaining to copyright online are now being re-interpreted by the powers-that-be in alarming new ways means that there's no point in pushing this boulder up a hill any longer. Mutant Sounds' original founder Jim is in full agreement with my sentiments and everything except for the texts has now been deleted. I understand this is really crushing news for many and I sympathize with your pain but I also hope you can see why the time has now come to call it a day.

Thanks to every one of you that have expressed your enthusiasm and moral support for Mutant over the years. I'm convinced that this music and a better understanding of it and its historical place will continue to spread, as it's been circulating around out there for some time now, so a thousand other platforms await your own able hands and intentions. My texts (those on the posts put up by vdoandsound) at least still reside under my control and thus they are now deemed anti-copyright and you are free to spread them far and wide, though proper attribution on these would obviously be appreciated when they're used.

For those who would like to be kept abreast of Vas Deferens Organization activity, a twitter account will be launched shortly to keep everyone interested up to date and to periodically hand out free material that we own.

Cyber Secrets #3: Mutant Sounds

The world wide web has become a virtual universe illuminating the reach of collective human imagination, which stretches farther every day. In our new series, we explore the forgotten corners and disused spaces of this universe, revealing some of the most ingenious, absurd and wonderful rest stops of the information superhighway. This time around we asked the infamous blog devoted to musical curiousnessMutant Sounds for their secret stash.

Following on from Bertolt Brecht’s admonition that “Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it,” here are ten squeaky clown hammers, the better to batter your corporately saturated brains back to an expanded awareness of art’s deeper potential with. And watch out for the hidden whoopee cushions and pulled rugs… they’ll get you every time.

1) Carles Santos “To-ca-ti-co To-ca-ta” (1982)
Spanish composer, sound poet and avant garde pianist Carles Santos’s elaborately patterned solo vocal works are vortexes of screw loose invention, with Santos flinging intricate mosaics of percussively enunciated speech fragments and fine tuned glossolalian gibberish off the twisted tip of his tongue with the whiplash panache of a seasoned bullfighter. Don’t be surprised to find yourself privately emulating these same vocal routines later on in the shower.

2) VISITORS (Massiera JP) (1981)
One of France’s most willfully outre musical voices, producer Jean-Pierre Massiera cut a blazing arc of unbridled strangeness through more than a decade of French underground rock. With a vast CV spanning the gamut from absurdist acid psychedelia to cosmic disco, his path was consistently marked by both its perverse humor and outwardly-bound sensibility, beginning back in 1968 with his brain-burning first album under the guise of Les Maledictus Sound. Resurrecting the band identity of VISITORS, with whom he’d cut a different self-titled album of prog-rock surrealism back in 1974, the version of the band re-assembled by Massiera in 1981 and seen here is an unbridled blast of period hilarity – this outing of theirs amounting to Massiera’s last great hurrah. On this band anthem (every band should have one!), JPM and crew perfectly capsulise the kind of Dr Who-damaged space kitsch that he’d first initiated with his cosmic disco outings under the banners of Venus Gang and JPM & Co.

3) The Wirtschaftswunder “Der Große Mafiosi”
Comprised of an international assemblage of Germans, Italians, Czechs and Canadians, this garrulous Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) unit from the early 80s featured guitarist Tom Dokoupil, a cornerstone NDW scene fixture and member of the equally striking Die Partei, Quick Culture and Die Radierer. In Wirtschaftswunder, he sends jagged shards of guitar scrabble sailing through the orifices in his bandmates’ trombone-blurting, synth bass-blooping, stentorian blathering and kettle drum-pounding sonic architecture.

4) Et Cetera “Raga Lady/Blue Thursday Morning/Sunrise” (1971)
Founded by Wolfgang Dauner, a one time free jazz pianist turned krautrock grand magi, Et Cetera finds him steering an A-list jazz-rock ensemble that includes bassist and future ECM label jazz star Eberhard Weber and guitarist Siggi Schwab of Embryo and theVampiros Lesbos soundtrack into the furriest hinterlands of lysergic destabilisation, with Schwab tearing away at his Indian Tarang as Dauner unleashes hailstorms of ring modulated clavinets and EMS synth squelch, and drummer Fred Braceful chimes in to opine about “the returning generation of the mighty mystic dream, come to burn away the fungus in your ears.” For a culture long accustomed to being bought off by cheap simulacra, the kind of soul purifying medicine on display here is almost too much to have to confront.

5) Arrigo Barnabé no Festival Universitário da MPB - parte 2
Watch in confused bemusement as arena-sized crowds of shirtless Brazilian hippies are whipped into fits of hysterical ecstasy by a hocketing, Zappa-damaged minor key jazz rock big band. Thrill to the sight of avant-garde interpretive dancing by men in ski masks. Gasp as teams of seductively shimmying Brazilian gals toss off dense contrapuntal roundelays of choral vocalese while being rudely interrupted by bandleader Barnabe’s gruff exhortations and baton waving. And if you thrill to this sort of thing as much as I do, your baton is likely to be waving in the breeze over this footage, too.

6) Samla Mammas Manna medverkar i en talkshow 1974
Amid the many fascinating currents of underground music that wound their way through the Swedish counterculture of the 70s, the work of Samla Mammas Manna (roughly: Collect Mothers Manna) stands out in stark relief. While there were many Swedish underground bands and artists that were mining the folkloric musical traditions of their country for inspiration, like Bo Hansson and Kebnekaise, only Samla saw it as a springboard to giddy absurdity. On this jaw dropping set from ’74, they pivot from windblown jazz rock lyricism and cheerfully galloping Swedish folk melodies into raspberry-blowing bulldada and muppet prog pantomime in the blink of a time signature. If this doesn’t put a smile on your face, consider seeking professional help.

7) Magma Hhai TV show 1978 , very rare!
People have changed their lives for less than this. Seizing on the emotionality of gospel music, herculean drummer and Magma mastermind Christian Vander would radically re-wire its internal circuitry in the most unorthodox and radical of ways, using it as a springboard to express the hopes, desires and, eventually, terrors of a whole parallel universe for which he then invented a language, mythology and symbology to express it. This emotionally loaded and coded language is known as Kobian and he had his band send it spilling out of their impassioned, hysterical mouths in frantic Orff-ian choral arrangements amidst some of the densest and most furious jazz fusion of the 70s. More than merely a band, Magma would birth an entire genre (known as ‘Zeuhl’) in emulation of the sound they pioneered and exponents can be found carrying on (along with Magma themselves!) to this very day. Beware all ye who enter here, though: there is nothing that can prepare you for your first taste of Magma and once this shit gets into your blood and under your skin, you’re done for. Nothing else will ever give you this kind of soul hit and you’ll be stuck like the rest of us poor fevered souls, conscripted forever into The First Church Of Magma.

8) Cardiacs “Tarred And Feathered” HQ
Extant from 1977 until 2008 and now tragically kaput due to bandleader Tim Smith’s combined stroke/heart attack, this unprecedented outfit tapped a mainline into the nerve-shattering, imagining a world in which bombastic prog rock, post-punk herky jerk and glam-pop camp not only co-exist but kaleidoscopically transmute into one another in a fever-pitched fit of punch drunk gooning and face pulling. Imagine Queen, Sparks and XTC simultaneously doing The Time Warp at warp speed, with choreography by The Marx Brothers.

9) Tuxedomoon “Colorado Suite (Early Studio Explorations)” [1977]
Initiated by former members of the radical transvestite theatrical troupe/commune/Cockettes-offshoot The Angels Of Light, this pioneering and under-sung San Francisco (latterly Rotterdam based) unit pioneered one of the most evocative strands of post-punk extant with their moody and arch stylings; a stance that would latterly get them tagged with descriptors like ‘cabaret wave’, though their aesthetic runs miles deeper than that would suggest. The combination of their curious instrumentation (sans drums but with prominent use of sax, synths and violins) and the seductive and idiosyncratic attack of vocalist Winston Tong conspire to erase all artificially imposed (counter)cultural boundaries between pre-punk and post-punk; the various members of Tuxedomoon having already lived through and emerged from the chrysalis of earlier subcultures. This 28-minute block of footage from 1977 captures them at the spellbinding peak of their powers, Tuxedomoon having arrived fully formed and life-altering right out of the gate.

10) Urban Sax
While I’ll refrain from launching into an impassioned argument about why the 70s and 80s French underground superseded in all respects the countercultural output from their krautrockin’ and Neue Deutsche Welle-ing German neighbors (you can go ascertain that knowledge yourself via Mutant Sounds), I’ll simply posit that within the hierarchy of French underground rock and weirdness from that time frame there exist certain vectors that reign supreme. One of the foremost of these is the malevolent spin on cosmic rock created by Urban Sax mastermind Gilbert Artman and his old band Lard Free in concord with the likes of Heldon and Verto. After wormholing his way to the farthest reaches of the lysergic unknown with his final eponymous Lard Free recording, Artman would re-group and emerge with a concept expansive enough to encompass whole universes: Urban Sax. Suiting up armies of sax players in dystopian costumes and arranging them across vast urban spaces that range from Versailles to Venice, Artman utilized this accumulated lung power to generate enveloping minor key drones that encircle his audience in eerie purgatorial vortices that slowly cascade in rounds from the bellows of his splayed out alien minions. This stunning 40+ minute documentary covers the full grandiose sweep of Artman’s work with Urban Sax from it’s inception onward. Bask in the sheer audacity of Artman’s musical vision and then ponder the era of diminished expectations that you currently occupy.

NNCK's Pat Murano Drops 7th Decimus LP

NNCK's Pat Murano Drops 7th Decimus LP
One time K Salvatore member turned operative in New York's sage institution of freaky outsider free action, the No Neck Blues Band, Pat Murano has been quietly turning out a series of acutely immersive electronic environments as part of a 12 LP series exploring the Zodiac. Decimus 4 is actually his seventh LP under the Decimus moniker, since they've been deliberately issued out of sequence to maximize collector confusion. Prior Decimus outings on Murano's own Kelippahimprint as well as Holidays Records and the Alga Marghen sublabel Planam responsible for this entry in the series have felt informed by both first wave Krautrock electronic merchants like Kluster and Seesselberg and the slurred, murked synth loop manipulations of post-industrial pioneer Maurizio Bianchi.
4, however, adds a whole 'noter sense of dimensionality to the Decimus equation, with glistening arteries of coiling and unfurling analog synth micro-activity doing a quicksilver slither through the more dominant gurgle surges of Murano's ever-modulating mix to increasingly reality-dissolving ends. Warning: this might cause spontaneous ejaculations among those inclined to palpitate over the likes of Sunroof! and Astral Social Club, so keep your hankies handy and steady yourself for the pore-penetrating kosmiche onslaught.
Decimus 4 is out now on Kelippah

Collateral Damage: Mutant Sounds' Eric Lumbleau

File sharers uploading rare and out of print records challenge official histories of music by confronting hand-me-down narratives with the source artefacts, arguesMutant Sounds blogger Eric Lumbleau.
If you’re critically engaged enough to be hashing through the contours of this column’s ongoing debate, you’re likely also sentient enough to be wracked by one of our generation’s key psychological afflictions; that internal tug-of-war that we each undertake in order to sustain a sense of deeper meaning or connection with the cultural artefacts that we encounter, despite this ahistorical nowever in which we’re all currently adrift; this vertiginous zone in which every last vestige of our collective cultural legacy past and present exists as freely interchangeable atomized particles with no meaningful breadcrumb trail left to daisy-chain them together. But while every conceivable sonic event now exists a few key clicks away, there is, I assume, still some comfort in knowing that the crème de la crème of a certain rarefied aesthetic is being warehoused at a specified location.

With the lid having already been thoroughly pried off the music-sharing Pandora’s box before I ever wandered into frame at the behest of the Greek collector who had started Mutant Sounds a few months earlier, it never occurred to me when I began my postings that this phenomenon was anything other than a fait accompli. Paradigm shifts are a bitch, but they’re also irreversible, and thus I never felt any real trepidation about the actions that I have taken in making all this obscure and long out-of-print material available for free, as long as we were doing our best to, by our own standards, keep our noses clean and keep in print work out of circulation. Fair being fair, I’ve posted the bulk of my own recorded back catalogue with Vas Deferens Organization, Sound, Tone Float and Jaloppy for free download alongside everyone else’s work.

Four years of postings later, the most notable thing about the response from artists is how little there has been, with only an infinitesimal fraction of those whose work we’ve shared having asked for their material to be removed in the absence of an album being either still in print (in the rare event that something still in print was posted by accident) or being due for reissue. Rather, numerous reissues have come to market as a direct result of those albums having first been discovered onMutant Sounds and/or made viable enough to reissue because of the increased profile that a previously obscure album has received by being posted on Mutant Sounds.

Despite the sky-is-falling implications of both this column’s name and the sentiments of contributors like Chris Cutler (The Wire 328), there’s nothing preordained about the presumed collapse of the independent record label. In Cutler’s case, a perceptual shift regarding the continued viability of the CD medium and a peek in on Collateral Damage contributor Amanda Brown’s Not Not Fun imprint would offer an object lesson on how some labels have managed to remain viable while negotiating these same waters, and her ability to quickly sell out of handsomely appointed vinyl in small editions is mirrored by my recent experience with the label that I co-run with my bandmates.

I personally conceive of Mutant Sounds as many things: as a Smithsonian Institute of the musical sub-underground and a psychic enema, releasing a trepanned spill of the accumulated arcana compacted in my brain from decades spent feverishly burrowing into forgotten universes; as the Nurse With Wound list of recommendations re-imagined as a living text and as a decoder ring for historically situating networks of marginalia that have previously sidestepped analysis; as a freak fringe music fan’s Pirate Utopia (consider the rectangle around our logo as a Digger Free Frame Of Reference), where the most elitist artefacts are liberated from the closed circuit of heavyweight rare record collectors; and as a seduction to the merely curious to wander outside their wheelhouse and lift a stray rock called ‘French RIO’, ‘Dadaist kitsch collage’ or ‘Beefheartian blather’ and have all their boundaries blown.

But beyond anything else, Mutant Sounds stands as a raspberry-blowing rebuke to the fates that have marginalised some of the most crucial musical information in history. At the time that I began working on the blog and that first lightbulb went off over my head, my feeling was that here, finally, was a means by which the entire shabby and ass-backward script that cadres of careless critics had foisted on successive generations of music fans could be undermined in one fell swoop; all those critic-generated time ellipses and lazily recycled memes that, for instance, sustain the stubbornly clinging nonsense that still allows ‘post-punk’ to be understood as an after-effect of punk (tell that to Suicide in 1972, Devo in 74 or Pere Ubu in 75). If some of our leading critical lights could fumble such a crucial causal relationship, imagine how much other screwy brilliance outside their ken has been left unassessed and dawdling at the margins.

With the advent of my work on Mutant Sounds, information could now meet artefact with a resounding wet splat and this entire hidden history could suddenly be unfurled like a banner and waved to signal the likeminded, and by likeminded, I mean all those that never subscribed to the ‘punk killed Prog birthed post-punk bred janglepop emerged as Grunge’ chronology that demarcates the eras that we principally cover on Mutant Sounds, and which has up until recently done such a bang-up job of bamboozling the masses with its bogus narrative; those who spent their energies hunting for music brimming with queer and outsider energies; those shrewd listeners that feel themselves aligned with Zappa/Beefheart/Krautrock/Nurse With Wound/Velvets/Residents/Eno/RIO//free jazz/electroacoustic/Prog/psych/fusion et al and find in Mutant Sounds’ aesthetic a perfect (funhouse) mirror reflection of their own sensibility.

With some 3000 posts hoisted since 2007, it could be argued that we’re ultimately just contributing more noise to the circuit. Me? I’d rather view it as an accumulation of wild psychic energies short-circuiting surrounding drifts of less meaningful historical data. Profundity served up in slop buckets. Would you expect anything less at this late date?
