Q: How much can you sample something before it becomes theft?
A: Who cares?
Terms such as DIY and Indie were created in relation to art to describe a new wave
of art made by people on their own budget.
They were developed as groupings for music released only via the creation of personal
music recording devices, thanks to home cassette technology.
As time went on, both terms were slowly converted from vague blankets into specific genres.
The most abstract you'll get with records under the term "DIY" is some industrial noise once
in a while.
Other than that, the term is used mostly to describe indie pop records that sound on the verge
of studio quality, yet still technically fall under the Indie and DIY terminology.
However, since the term DIY's inception, the rise of personal computers and programs such as
Audacity and Ableton, along with websites such as Soundcloud and Bandcamp, has allowed a
new revolution of people to release whatever they want, whenever they want.
This list will be highlighting some obscure, boundary pushing records released
thanks to this 2nd wave of DIY music technology. Many records on this list fit into
subgenres all their own, often charging little to no money for the releases.
Links will be provided, along with what I can guess the artist would classify their releases as.
